Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and former President allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
