World Health Organization Issues Alert Over Acute Lack of Obesity Injections

Less than one in 10 patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it releases its first advice on the drugs.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to these injectable treatments.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be managed with thorough and lifelong support," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are significant barriers to universal availability to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial body mass, explains the body.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even under the current best projected scenario, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach about 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to increase access, by measures including licensing agreements.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the core component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Work

The injections imitate a natural hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and increase the sense of being full so people reduce food intake.

Individuals usually begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests users may regain a significant portion after a year of halting the drug, when their typical hunger return.

Being above a healthy weight raises your likelihood for experiencing diseases, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight concerns people in every country and was linked to millions of fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
